How to calculate percentage change
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value and multiply by 100. An increase from 80 to 100 is 25%.
Excel formula: =(B2-A2)/A2. Format the result as a percentage.
Important boundaries
A zero starting value has no defined percentage change. Negative starting values can produce counterintuitive signs; interpret the result in context.
